Mapping Australia's Renewable Energy Transition (MARET)
Welcome to an interactive exploration of Australia's electricity infrastructure and renewable energy transition.
This tool combines historical, current, and projected data to
tell the story of how Australia's energy landscape has evolved and continues to transform.
Ways to use this site
Explore the story: Scroll down to begin the guided story mode, gaining an
understanding of how Australia's energy system has changed over time, and how it might evolve in the future.
Explore the map: Skip straight to the end to interact directly with the map. You can use
the
year navigation bar to quickly scroll through time, or
toggle the timeline below for a more detailed view of how the energy landscape has transformed over time.
Filter data: Apply filters to focus on specific types of energy infrastructure.
Toggle transmission lines: Use the transmission line button or filter panel to show or
hide transmission lines on the map.

Transmission Lines Filter
Transmission Line Voltage Levels: Filter the map to show different transmission line
categories based on their operating voltage.
Voltage Categories:
High Voltage (66kV-132kV): Regional distribution and interconnection lines
Extra High Voltage (220kV-330kV): Major interstate and state-level transmission
Ultra High Voltage (500kV+): Critical backbone transmission infrastructure
How to Use:
Click on the colored lines to toggle different voltage categories on/off
Each voltage level is represented by a different color
Use the master toggle to show/hide all transmission lines at once
Note: Commissioning years for transmission lines are estimated using
historical documentation and may not reflect exact construction dates.
Transmission lines: Geospatial data from AEMO's interactive map.
Commissioning years for transmission lines were estimated using
a combination of official AEMO documentation, historical maps, and cross-referencing with major
infrastructure projects. Where exact dates were unavailable, conservative estimates were made based on
the earliest confirmed operational year from available sources.
Postcode solar data: From the Clean Energy Regulator's postcode data.
Historical data: Various historical sources; details and references are
included in the
downloadable tables below.
Data Processing
All datasets were cleaned, standardised, and merged using Python scripts and Jupyter notebooks. Geospatial and
tabular data were harmonised for consistency across sources and time periods. Data was stored in a local
SQLite
database for efficient querying and serving to the web application.
Visualisation
Interactive maps rendered with Mapbox GL JS.
Charts and timelines built with Chart.js and custom TypeScript modules.
Historical timeline visualised using Timeline.js.
All visualisations are synchronised by year for a cohesive exploration
experience.
Data is provided as-is for research and transparency.
While best endeavours have been taken to ensure data quality, the validity and accuracy of the data cannot be
guaranteed. This tool is intended as an introductory educational resource only and should not be relied upon for
critical or professional decision-making.
This project was completed as an Engineering Final Year Project at Monash University, Clayton.
